Hi, I’m Jonathan Kirby, and I’ve spent over 15 years immersed in the veterinary profession, first as a practice owner alongside my wife, Christine, an OVC 2006 graduate, and later as a consultant helping practice owners improve and grow their businesses. My journey began with love—Christine’s passion for animals and medicine drew me into the world of veterinary care, and some of our first dates involved me tagging along on farm calls or stopping by the practice she was working at to check on hospitalized patients.
My Practice Ownership Journey
We purchased our first practice while Christine was six months pregnant, and many thought we were crazy. The early days were tough—we made mistakes and learned as we went—but with time, perseverance, and a lot of teamwork, we built a practice that thrived. Selling it to facilitate a relocation was bittersweet, but it opened the door to a new chapter. I partnered and helped launch a firm that helped veterinary practice owners streamline operations and prepare for successful sales. Over the course of a couple of years, I worked with 25+ practices across Canada, from small clinics to multi-vet operations, overseeing over $220M in practice sales.
Despite the success stories, I always noticed how isolating practice ownership could be. Many owners, myself included, felt the weight of juggling patient care, team management, and profitability without a clear roadmap or support system.
That’s why I’m so excited to launch Vet Practice Growth Academy—a community and resource hub I wish I’d had during those early ownership days.
